Case study: Matt, aged 7, ADHD

A young boy whose teachers and parents were both worried. All names and some details have been changed.

The concerns

Matt's teachers were concerned about his lack of concentration, his inability to sit still and his impulsive behaviour. His parents, Nick and Anna, had noticed the same things. They found Matt very difficult to manage at home, and he could be defiant and aggressive towards his brother.

One to one, he was delightfully funny and caring. He loved playing football.

The impact at school

By the time Matt came to see us, his teachers were reporting problems with his behaviour, and he was frequently in detention.

The assessment and early support

A detailed ADHD assessment showed significant symptoms of ADHD. His teachers were given advice on supporting children like Matt in class. His parents were given information about ADHD and the contacts of local parent support groups.

Medication for ADHD was also discussed. Matt's parents decided to wait a term, and the family were given advice on managing ADHD at home.

Follow-up

Things improved for Matt, but when he came back he was still behind in his learning and handwriting. His self-esteem was a little better, but still low.

The decision about medication

After careful thought, Matt and his parents decided to try medication. The doctor explained how it worked, and Matt is now finding things easier.

Every family's decision about medication is their own. For some children support at home and school is enough; for others, medication makes a real difference. Our guide to ADHD medication for children explains the options.
