How much does a private ADHD assessment for a child cost?

At BZ Clinic, a private ADHD assessment for a child costs £1,700. That covers the whole assessment, from the questionnaires to the letter afterwards, with no extra charge for the QbCheck.

What is included in a new assessment

  • Questionnaires for you, your child's school and, where appropriate, your child
  • QbCheck, usually done at home before the appointment
  • A 90-minute face-to-face appointment with a consultant paediatrician
  • A clear answer, usually on the day, whether or not it is ADHD, with recommendations for home and school
  • A detailed letter for you, copied to your GP

What to expect at the assessment

Already diagnosed somewhere else?

If your child has a diagnosis from another clinic or the NHS, you may not need a full new assessment. We review the previous report first. It needs to follow NICE guidance and is usually from the last 3 years. If it meets those standards, the clinic transfer appointment (£1,200, 60 minutes) is enough to consider treatment, including medication. If it does not, we will explain why a full assessment is needed.

Transferring your child's care

After the assessment

If your child starts medication, they will need a short medication review (£270, 30 minutes) about a month after starting, then a longer clinic review (£370, 45 minutes) at around 3 months, and private prescriptions until your GP takes over prescribing under shared care, usually after around 3 to 4 months.

Will my GP prescribe after a private diagnosis?

This is the question parents ask us most, so here is the honest answer.

  1. We start medication and review it

If medication is right for your child, our doctor starts it and sees your child for reviews until they are stable on it, usually around 3 to 4 months.

  2. We ask your GP to take over

We write to your GP with the assessment letter and ask them to take over prescribing under a shared care agreement, while we carry on reviewing.

  3. If your GP says no, treatment does not stop

Shared care is each GP practice's own decision, and policies vary. If your GP declines, a private GP practice we work with in West Byfleet can take over prescribing. The practice charges its own fees, and Camille can explain them.

No private clinic can promise shared care, and you should be wary of any that does: the decision belongs to your GP. It helps to ask your practice about its policy before you book. We are happy to explain to your GP how we work.

Paying for your appointment

You can pay by card, bank transfer or cash. We do not accept American Express. Camille will explain when to pay when she books your appointment, and fees are confirmed before you book, so there are no surprises.

Dr Zoric is registered with all major health insurers, and your insurer can pay her directly. Please arrange prior approval for the assessment with your insurer before you book. Dr Wall is not yet registered with insurers.

Right to Choose, NHS or private?

An NHS assessment is free, but waits in many areas are long. In England, Right to Choose lets your GP refer your child to another NHS-funded provider, which is also free, and for many families it is the right route. Providers, waits and formats vary, so it is worth asking who will assess your child and whether it is face to face.

BZ Clinic is not on the Right to Choose pathway. Families who pay to see us usually want:

  • a consultant paediatrician who looks at their child's general health as well as ADHD
  • a face-to-face assessment close to home, with a QbCheck included
  • a clear plan for medication, including a private GP option if their GP will not take over prescribing

Our guides on NHS or private ADHD assessments and how to choose a private ADHD clinic set out the options honestly.

Questions about fees

How much is a private ADHD assessment for a child?

At BZ Clinic, a new ADHD assessment for a child costs £1,700. That includes the questionnaires, a QbCheck, a 90-minute appointment with a consultant paediatrician and a letter afterwards.

Is there a cheaper option?

We only offer full assessments that follow NICE guidance, with a consultant paediatrician, because a diagnosis needs to be reliable enough for your GP and your child's school to act on.

Do I pay anything before the appointment?

Camille will explain when to pay when she books your appointment, so there are no surprises. You can pay by card, bank transfer or cash. We do not accept American Express.

Is a private ADHD assessment covered by health insurance?

Dr Zoric is registered with all major health insurers, and your insurer can pay her directly. You will need to arrange prior approval for the assessment with your insurer before booking. Dr Wall is not yet registered with insurers.

Will my GP's prescriptions cost the same?

Once your GP takes over prescribing under shared care, your child's prescriptions are NHS prescriptions. In England they are free for children under 16 and for 16 to 18 year olds in full-time education. Otherwise the standard NHS charge applies.

Do private prescriptions cost extra?

Yes. While we are prescribing, each private prescription is £40 posted to you, or £30 if you collect it in clinic. This stops once your GP takes over under shared care.
