What to expect at your child's ADHD assessment
From the moment you first get in touch you will receive a warm welcome. Here is what happens at each step, so you and your child know what is coming.

Your child's ADHD assessment, step by step
We see children and young people from 5 to 18 where there are concerns about concentration, hyperactivity, impulsivity or behaviour. Every step follows NICE guidance, and nothing happens without you knowing why.
If you have questions at any point, call Camille on 07957 909754.
- Your first call with Camille
Camille, our clinic manager, explains how the assessment works, answers your questions and books a date.
- Questionnaires before the appointment
We send questionnaires to you and, with your agreement, to your child's school. Older children may fill in their own. This shows how things look in more than one setting.
- QbCheck, usually at home
The QbCheck is usually done at home before the appointment, and older children can do it online with a parent nearby. Glenda, our clinic co-ordinator, arranges it and is happy to help with any questions. Your child then sees the doctor face to face.
- The appointment in West Byfleet
90 minutes with a consultant paediatrician, face to face, with you and your child.
- Answers and next steps
Usually the doctor can give you a clear answer on the day, whether or not it is ADHD, and talk through recommendations for home and school.
- Your letter
A detailed letter for you, copied to your GP, which you can share with your child's school.
The QbCheck ADHD test
As part of every new assessment, your child does a QbCheck. It is a computer-based, interactive test that measures attention, activity levels and impulsivity. A small camera tracks movement while your child responds to shapes on the screen, which gives the doctor objective information alongside the questionnaires.
QbCheck is especially helpful when a child hides their difficulties, at school or in the clinic, which many children, and girls especially, do. It is not a pass or fail test, and it is never used on its own: it is one part of the wider assessment.
It is usually done at home before the appointment, guided by our clinic co-ordinator. The price is included in the assessment fee.
On the day of the appointment
The doctor will already have read the questionnaires and the QbCheck results. They will talk with you about your child's early years, health, school and home life, and what feels hardest right now. They will talk with your child in a way that suits their age, and look at their general health.
Many children feel shy or anxious in appointments. That is very common, and they do not have to do lots of talking. We take a calm, gentle approach.
It helps to jot down:
- when you first noticed concerns
- what is hardest right now: mornings, homework, friendships, school
- what makes things worse: tiredness, change, busy places, pressure
- what already helps: routine, movement, reminders, calm time
- any questions you want answered on the day
You do not need a perfect account. A few honest examples are enough.
Where the appointment takes place
Appointments are at West Byfleet Consulting Rooms, Madeira Road, West Byfleet, Surrey KT14 6DH, above West Byfleet GP Health Centre and a 2-minute walk from West Byfleet station. Every appointment is face to face.
There is no free parking at the consulting rooms. The best place to park is the Botanical car park, which is cashless: pay with RingGo (location 71844) and choose up to 3 hours for a new assessment. Waitrose customers can park free at Waitrose for 1.5 hours, which is not long enough for a new assessment.

Questions parents ask
What is QbCheck?
QbCheck is a computer-based test that measures attention, activity levels and impulsivity. It gives the doctor objective information to add to the questionnaires and the appointment. It is not a pass or fail test and is never used on its own.
Is QbCheck included in the price?
Yes. QbCheck is part of every new assessment and is included in the £1,700 fee.
How long is the appointment?
The appointment with the doctor lasts 90 minutes.
Does my child need to come to the appointment?
Yes. The doctor meets you and your child together, and talks with your child in a way that suits their age.
What if school will not fill in the questionnaire?
The assessment can still go ahead. The doctor will advise on the best approach, and the QbCheck adds objective information. We do recommend that school is involved at some point.
How should I prepare my child?
Keep it simple and positive: they are going to meet a doctor who helps children with concentration and feeling settled at school. There are no injections and nothing to worry about.
