Is an ADHD assessment right for my child?

You might be thinking about an assessment if your child struggles to concentrate, is restless or impulsive, or finds it hard to manage at school or at home, and it has been going on for a while. Often a teacher notices it first. Sometimes it is a parent who feels something is not quite right, even when school says all is well.

We see children and young people from 5 to 18. During the assessment the doctor also looks for signs of other conditions that can look similar to ADHD or come alongside it, such as autism, Tourette's syndrome, dyspraxia and dyslexia. We assess ADHD only, so if we think something else needs looking at, we will tell you and point you to the right service.

Not sure yet? Our free ADHD questionnaire for parents and teachers can help you decide.

Support while you wait. You do not need a diagnosis to get help. Parenting courses such as Triple P Online, ADHD Embrace and Barnardo's free Surrey service can help now, and school can put support in place before an assessment. See support before an assessment.

What a child ADHD assessment includes

Every new assessment follows NICE guidance and looks at how your child manages in more than one setting, usually home and school.

Questionnaires

From you and your child's school, and sometimes from your child. We use the Conners questionnaires, a widely used set of ADHD rating scales.

QbCheck

A computer-based test of attention, activity and impulsivity, included in every new assessment and usually done at home before the appointment. It is especially useful when a child hides their difficulties in clinic or at school.

A face-to-face appointment

90 minutes with a consultant paediatrician, with you and your child. The doctor takes a full history, talks with your child, and looks at their general health as well as attention and behaviour.

Answers and a plan

Usually a clear answer on the day, whether or not it is ADHD, with recommendations for home and school, and a detailed letter for you and your GP that you can share with school.

How it works, step by step

We keep the process simple and you will always know what happens next. If anything is unclear, Camille is a phone call away.

What to expect on the day

  1. Get in touch

Send an enquiry or call. Camille, our clinic manager, will call you back, explain how it works and answer your questions.

  2. Questionnaires

We send questionnaires to you and, with your agreement, to your child's school.

  3. QbCheck

Usually done at home before the appointment, with a parent nearby. Glenda, our clinic co-ordinator, is happy to help with any questions.

  4. The appointment

You and your child meet the doctor at our clinic in West Byfleet.

  5. Your plan

You leave with a diagnosis where one is made, and clear next steps. If medication is right for your child, it can be started.

Will my GP prescribe after a private diagnosis?

This is the question parents ask us most, so here is the honest answer.

  1. We start medication and review it

If medication is right for your child, our doctor starts it and sees your child for reviews until they are stable on it, usually around 3 to 4 months.

  2. We ask your GP to take over

We write to your GP with the assessment letter and ask them to take over prescribing under a shared care agreement, while we carry on reviewing.

  3. If your GP says no, treatment does not stop

Shared care is each GP practice's own decision, and policies vary. If your GP declines, a private GP practice we work with in West Byfleet can take over prescribing. The practice charges its own fees, and Camille can explain them.

No private clinic can promise shared care, and you should be wary of any that does: the decision belongs to your GP. It helps to ask your practice about its policy before you book. We are happy to explain to your GP how we work.

Medication is not right for every child. The doctor will talk through every option with you, including support at home and at school. ADHD medication for children explains more.

Why families choose BZ Clinic

  • Consultant paediatricians. Both our doctors are NHS consultants who have led ADHD and neurodevelopmental services.
  • The whole child. Paediatricians are trained in children's general health as well as ADHD, so we look at everything that might be affecting your child, not only the symptoms.
  • Face to face. Every assessment is in person, in a calm consulting room.
  • High standards. Our assessments follow NICE guidance and are regularly audited.
  • Honest about shared care. We never promise your GP will prescribe, and we have a private GP option in West Byfleet if they do not.

Dr Lisa Wall, Consultant Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician at BZ Clinic

Dr Lisa Wall

Consultant Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician

Clinical Lead for Surrey Developmental Paediatrics since 2017, with over 20 years in neurodevelopmental paediatrics. Seeing new patients at BZ Clinic from November 2026.

About Dr Lisa Wall

Both our doctors are NHS consultant paediatricians, regulated by the General Medical Council (GMC). They work for an NHS provider that is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and both their NHS and private practice are appraised and audited every year through that NHS employer's appraisal system. For this reason BZ Clinic is not currently required to register with the CQC.

This may change following the government's recent review of ADHD services, and we are monitoring it closely. All our assessments follow NICE guidance and every appointment is face to face.

Questions parents ask

Do I need a GP referral for a private ADHD assessment?

No. You can contact us directly. We welcome referrals from GPs too, and your GP is always sent the letter after your child's assessment.

How long is the wait?

Waiting times change through the year. Camille can give you the latest dates when you get in touch.

How old does my child need to be?

We assess children and young people from 5 to 18.

Will my GP prescribe after a private diagnosis?

Many GPs agree to take over prescribing under a shared care arrangement once medication is stable, usually after around 3 to 4 months. It is each practice's decision and no clinic can promise it. If your GP is not able to, a private GP practice we work with in West Byfleet can take over prescribing. See how shared care works.

Should we use NHS Right to Choose instead?

Right to Choose can give your child a free, NHS-funded assessment with another provider, via your GP, and for many families it is the right route. BZ Clinic is not on the Right to Choose pathway. Families who come to us usually want a face-to-face assessment with a consultant paediatrician close to home. Our guide to NHS or private ADHD assessments compares the options.

Do you assess teenagers?

Yes. Teenagers usually fill in their own questionnaire as well as parents and teachers. ADHD assessments for teenagers explains more.

My daughter seems to cope at school. Could she still have ADHD?

Yes. Girls in particular often hide their difficulties, and teachers do not always see them. That is one reason a QbCheck is part of every new assessment. Our guide to ADHD in girls explains more.

Will my child have to do lots of talking?

Not necessarily. Many children feel anxious or unsure in appointments, and that is very common. We take a calm, gentle approach and help children feel comfortable.

My child already has a diagnosis from another clinic.

We can review it and consider treatment, including medication. See already diagnosed: clinic transfers.

Is the assessment covered by health insurance?

Dr Zoric is registered with all major health insurers, and your insurer can pay her directly. You will need to arrange prior approval for the assessment with your insurer before booking. Dr Wall is not yet registered with insurers.
